LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MARRIAGE
IN AUSTRALIA
To marry in Australia requires the completion of a "Notice of
Intention to Marry". This must be lodged with the Celebrant at
least one month and one day prior to the marriage taking place.
In order to complete the “Notice of Intention to Marry”,
identification must be shown. For Australian born, a full birth certificate
is required. For overseas born, an overseas passport or, if you are
a naturalised Australian, your birth certificate*. If either party
has been married previously, either a decree absolute or death certificate
must be shown whichever is appropriate.
*If for some
reason you are unable to obtain a full birth certificate (this would
only apply to overseas born couples, as Australian born people must
have a full birth certificate) Marilyn can prepare a Statutory Declaration
for you to sign, in order for your marriage to be solemnised. |
